What an incredibly smart and witty comedy. The part where Ricky Gervais’ character become an ad hoc Moses holding two pizza boxes was awesome. I could just imagine prophets appearing in this day and age and having to deal with the modern man. The ending was kind of disappointing though. Nevertheless… watch it!
The Ugly Truth (2009)
Labels: Robert Luketic | author: YaoLoved it. Decent plot with Gerard Butler’s “talk” makes this a movie worth watching. Especially loved Katherine Heigl’s “spazzy” dances. Plus the orgasmic sales pitch at the dinner table was hilarious. If you’re single you need to watch this movie! Watch it!
Echelon Conspiracy (2009)
Labels: Greg Marcks | author: YaoIt has potential and could be way better. The kill-the-supercomputer-with-a-logic-paradox technique is kind of cliché. And the ending with the Russians just makes it more confusing. The theme song is pretty good, sounds very much cyberpunk-ish. Watch it if you want.
Sherlock Holmes
Labels: Guy Ritchie | author: Aleph… the costumes, the characters, the plot, and the stream of consciousness of Holmes, played by Robert Downey Jr. (whose upper English dialect is pitch-perfect), gives this film a fun personality. Guy Ritchie outdid his abilities as a film-maker on this one. Snatch and Lock, Stock, and Two Smocking Barrels are enjoyable because of their Tarantinoesque personality, but Holmes seems to be Ritchie’s dream project, which puts him at the top of his game. He deserves the attention because this piece of cinema manages to accomplish the adventure genre in a unique way. This film is stylish, witty, organized, and colorful, which makes this Ritchie’s most personable film thus far. He accomplishes this without ever deviating from the psychological stimulus that allows the Sherlock Holmes stories to be incredibly enticing for readers. This needs to be stressed: watch, watch, watch; disappointment for this film is leagues away.
27 Dresses (2008)
Labels: Anne Fletcher | author: YaoMeh. This is supposed to be a romantic comedy right? But… I don’t notice any significant comedic segments or head-over-heels romance. Meh. One thing that really grinds my gears is that Malin Akerman is not hotter than Katherine Heigl; why the hell does the film, or more accurately, the casting director tries to infer that? Don’t watch.
He’s Just Not That Into You (2009)
Labels: Ken Kwapis | author: YaoA stellar cast but the plot is like a dying fish flip flopping around. The characters have little or no depth and everything seemed forced. They tried very hard to copy “Love Actually”, but failed miserably. Don’t watch it unless you want to catch a glimpse of Scarlett Johansson’s breasts bouncing in almost all her scenes.
Let It Be (1970)
Labels: Michael Lindsay-Hogg | author: AlephThis documentary should hold a special place in the hearts of Beatles fans. The most lovable band of all time is filmed during their jamming sessions and rehearsals for what was to be their last album, “Let it Be,” and their last performance on the Apple studios rooftop. Although most of the conflict that occurred between the four lads (eventually leading to the break-up) is absent due to certain footages being controversial, this documentary shows that they were all about the music. Most of the documentary is just the four of them doing what they loved most, making music.
Avatar (2009)
Labels: James Cameron | author: YaoIf you love CGI, this is the movie for you. I watched it in 3D and it looks amazing. One point of contention though, I feel that the 3D distract the audience from the movie itself. It is as though James Cameron took an average script and covered it up with glitz and glamour and sold it as a blockbuster. Watch it for the effects.
Nine Miles Down (2009)
Labels: Anthony Waller | author: YaoVery cerebral. Kind of reminds me of “The Shining”, but with a way more hotter main character play by Kate Nauta. The plot, although average, had me guessing till the very end. Watch it.
An Education (2009)
Labels: Lone Scherfi | author: AlephSet in 1960s England, Jenny is seduced by luxury and economic freedom. This tempts even the devil himself, for the devil is the admiration for longing, and seeing that longing beautify itself as it comes true only corrupts initial goals set by the individual; which is Amy. Admiration and longing is her motivation to do well in school. This movie gives these two eternal cinematic themes and makes them pure. An Education is learned, and it is more than worth it.
Julia & Julia (2009)
Labels: Nora Ephron | author: YaoNever had a movie made me so hungry. Oh… the food, the gorgeous food. Didn’t really like the plot that much; very bland for my taste. And whoever did Amy Adams’ hair ought to be shot. Plus, even though Meryl Streep did a respectable job portraying Julia Childs, her falsetto voice got annoying after a while. Watchable.
Messages Deleted (2009)
Labels: Rob Cowen | author: YaoAn above average thriller. The plot is kind of predictable though and the ending is outright textbook Hollywood “twist”. Always good to see Matthew Lillard in action. He have this awesome cinematic voice. Watch it if you want.
